Today is opening day for Charleston’s designated outdoor drinking area

City officials have announced Charleston’s first private outdoor designated area will go live this week, allowing outdoor drinking to take place during holiday festivities. The capital city will host a “Sip-n-Stroll” event today (Friday) during the annual Holly Jolly Brawley starting at 4 p.m. with additional outdoor drinking hours scheduled Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to a news release from the city of Charleston. The PODA district will be marked by boundary signage and participating businesses will use color-coded decals. Black stickers indicates an establishment serves beverages, green decals welcome open containers and the color red indicates the business does not permit drinks inside. The Charleston City Council voted to pass a PODA ordinance last month, following the lead of Huntington, the city that created the state’s first outdoor drinking district.
