Upshur County Schools to repay misspent funds

The West Virginia Department of Education has published a report regarding a special circumstances review of Upshur County Schools, requesting more than $800,000 of improper spending be reimbursed and noting issues with personnel and payroll. The state took over the public school system earlier this year after officials discovered improper spending of federal emergency relief funds. State education officials requested a refund of payments made for unallowable expenditures exceeding $220,000. As the grant awards have expired, the money will be returned to the U.S. Treasury.
