Reaction is coming in after a 10.5% premium hike approved by the Public Employee Insurance Agency Finance Board. Teachers’ unions concede the board had little choice but to approve the second increase in as many years, but want a change in legislation over how rising medical expenses are split between the government and the people who work for it. PEIA provides health insurance to some 200,000 state workers and their families along with about 30,000 non-state government workers. Thursday’s rate roughly translates to a $15 to $65 monthly increase, based on coverage. The increase follows a 24.2% hike earlier this year.
