Don Blankenship files to run for a Senate seate

Don Blankenship, a former CEO of Massey Energy, has announced plans to run for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat. The West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office received paperwork Friday as Blankenship enters a Republican-dominated field for the state office. Blankenship joins Glen Elliott and Zachary Shrewsbury as the only Dems to run for the office. Blankenship finished third in the 2018 Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat before making a run for the White House as a part of the Constitution Party in 2020. The embattled Blankenship spent a year in prison after being convicted of conspiring to violate safety standards at a Massey-owned mine. An explosion at West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch in 2010 killed 29 workers.
