A mistrial was declared after a Cabell County jury returned mixed verdicts in the case of a man accused in connection with the shooting of two deputies in 2020. Michael Pinkerman Sr. was found not guilty on malicious wounding and wanton endangerment charges and guilty of obstructing an officer. The jury was hung on two counts of attempted murder. Pinkerman was charged after prosecutors said he aided his son by blocking the door of their home and would not let law enforcement inside to serve warrants. The incident resulted in an exchange of gunfire that left two deputies injured and Michael Pinkerman Jr. dead. Defense attorneys argued the younger Pinkerman was responsible for the incident. Pinkerman’s attorney, Tom Peyton insisted his client never had a gun and the firearm was owned by his son. A sentencing date is set for March 11 on the obstruction charge. It is up to the prosecutor’s office to decide whether to pursue another trial on the attempted murder charges.
