A man learns his sentence related to a counterfeit scheme at a Summersville hotel

A North Carolina man was sentenced to prison Friday for his role in a scheme to pass counterfeit currency in southern West Virginia. Jamarcus Harris was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release time for conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia. The news release said in October 2022, Harris, along with co-defendants Crystal Wilks and Xavier Sanders traveled to West Virginia to pass bogus $100 bills at businesses in Beckley, Fayetteville and Summersville. The defendants rented a room at a Summersville hotel and made attempts to create more false currency by bleaching $1 bills, scanning $100 bills, and printing new notes according to prosecutors. Wilks and Sanders have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.
