South Charleston postal facility to be renovated and modernized

A review of the United States Postal Service facility in South Charleston has found that it should be modernized and turned into an upgraded processing and sorting facility. The initial findings released Tuesday call for up to a $30 million investment to modernize and prepare the facility near Southridge for a new role as a local processing center with “state-of-the-art” equipment. The upgrades would also allow for the replacement of the USPS’ 30-year-old vehicles as it transitions to using more electric vehicles. The review said no career layoffs are expected, but the South Charleston facility is expected to lose 24 craft and one management position that could be reassigned to new roles within the facility. The USPS said a further review is now underway to determine how long it will take to renovate the facility and if more employees would be needed. The USPS expects a net savings at the South Charleston facility of up to $8.9 million annually once the changes are complete.
