Cabell County School system agrees to send money to parks and libraries

School officials in Cabell County have proposed a revision to excess levy funding to parks and libraries. School superintendent Ryan Saxe said he has recommended an amendment to the county’s excess levy that would allow for more than $1.3 million for the Cabell County Public Library system and $200,000 for the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District. The move comes after the West Virginia Supreme Court recently reversed a lower court’s December ruling saying the parks and libraries were not entitled to the nearly $2 million in funding they had been getting. The school system said the funding for libraries in the proposed amendment matches the same rate as Kanawha County where 4.5% of the levy is allocated to the library system. If approved in May, Eyewitness News said the levy would make the contributions to the parks district the highest in the state. Cabell County Schools said the excess levy, if passed, would fund things like school resource officers, employee salary supplements, athletics, instructional support, summer programming and more.
