Excessive force lawsuit has been filed against the City of Charleston

The city of Charleston is facing an excessive force lawsuit. The city and some employees with three law enforcement agencies are accused of using excessive force against a suspect who was being pursued in March 2022. The suspect fled from officers at the intersection of Chesterfield and MacCorkle Avenue and sped through stop signs. Court records show he threw a revolver out the window at one point. The lawsuit accuses four Charleston police officers and unnamed employees with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Police of punching and kicking the plaintiff. The suit also said he needed medical attention.
