Anglers in West Virginia learned this week that the state’s annual Gold Rush trout stocking giveaway will return bigger than ever in 2024. The annual trout stocking event, named after the golden rainbow trout, will feature five times the number of chances to win prizes when it returns April 1, according to a news release from Gov. Jim Justice’s Office. Out of the 50,000 golden rainbow trout stocked during the event, 500 trout will receive a numbered tag, five times the number of tagged trout in past years. If an angler catches a trout with one of these tags, they can enter the tag number for a chance to win one of five free West Virginia lifetime fishing licenses, a one-night stay at a state park or forest cabin or a $25 West Virginia State Parks gift card. All anglers 15 and older must have a West Virginia fishing license with a current trout stamp and a valid form of identification while fishing during the event.
