Gov Justice vetos vaccine bill

On Wednesday Gov. Jim Justice vetoed House Bill 5105, a conflict-ridden bill that would have significantly weakened West Virginia’s vaccination policy for students. The bill would have removed vaccination requirements for students in virtual public schools and private and parochial schools would have been able to set their own standards. While the bill saw support from groups that championed it as a personal or religious freedom, it was opposed by a number of medical professionals which influenced his decision. Governor Justice issued a statement saying: “Our medical community in West Virginia serves our people every single day, helping protect our people from disease and poor health. Their wisdom should not be ignored-especially when it comes to the health and safety of our children.”
