West Virginia Lawmakers worked Saturday to pass two significant bills which will increase salaries for some employees and phase out Social Security taxes. These came late just before the session was scheduled to end and with the budget bill still undecided. House Bill 4883 calls for raises for state workers like West Virginia State Police, public school teachers and others whose pay scales are ruled by state code. Senators unanimously approved House Bill 4880, phasing out Social Security taxes by 2026. These two pieces of legislation were prioritized by West Virginia Governor Justice in his final year. The possible impact of these two laws on the state’s budget had them stuck as lawmakers negotiated the budget bill. Both laws now head to the governor’s desk for signing.
