Volunteer Fire Departments struggle to maintain their rosters

Madison Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joey Smith says he has 24 volunteer firefighters on his roster, but only about eight run one or more calls per month. The department responds to between 35 and 50 calls every month, according to Smith. He tells Eyewitness News the majority of the Madison VFD firefighters have a nine to five job, making it difficult for them to respond to calls during the work week. Recruiting continues to be an issue cross the nation, not just in Boone County. Commissioner Jeff Petry said recruitment for the fire departments in the county is typically done in house by each department. The county’s fire levy passed on Tuesday in the primary election, which he said helps provide some relief for the volunteer fire departments in the county.
