A Charleston mayor in the 1970s has passed away

Former Charleston mayor John G. Hutchinson passed away in Atlanta on Friday at the age of 89. Hutchinson was the city’s youngest mayor who served three-terms in the 1970s and oversaw the development of the Charleston Town Center and the Charleston Civic Center. Hutchinson would go on to Congress serving West Virginia’s third district in the United States House of Representatives in 1980 after winning a special election before exiting politics the following year.
