George Washington High School student wins art competition

A Kanawha County teen is a big winner at an international art competition. George Washington High School junior Katelyn Lowe received the Best in Show prize at their ARTEFFECT competition, now in its ninth year. The competition for 6th through 12th grade students from around the world encourages students to tell the stories of unsung heroes who made a positive impact on history. Lowe’s artwork is called “A Woman Ahead of Her Time” and highlights the work of Jackie Ormes, who was the first Black woman cartoonist to have her work published in newspapers. As part of her Best in Show prize, Lowe received an award of $3,000.
