Jerry West, Hero, Icon West VA pride and joy

Before Jerry West became ‘The Logo,’ he faced hardship as a child in West Virginia. He was physically abused by his father, and his brother, David, was killed in action in the Korean War. “He had had a lot of pain in his life,” said author Roland Lazenby, who resides in Salem, VA. “He’s a very complex man, which made it very, very difficult to write about him because, not only was he a complex man, dark and light, but he was quite the hero.” West, who died Wednesday, was a collegiate star at West Virginia before going on to a prolific NBA career with the Lakers. Lazenby wrote his biography, Jerry West: The Life and Legend of a Basketball Icon, in 2010. He says West’s playing style was a precursor to the fast-paced shooting barrage of the modern game. Despite winning nine NBA championships, one as a player and eight as a front-office executive, West held true to his Appalachian roots.
