Plea deal falls apart at the last minute for teen set to plead guilty

A teenager was set to plead guilty Monday morning for the shooting death of a tobacco shop employee in Charleston but moments before the hearing, the plea fell apart.14-year old Bre’juan Williams-Hampton of Charleston, had first-degree murder and first-degree robbery charges moved from juvenile court to adult status in April.

His attorney told the court Monday that Williams-Hampton no longer desired to go forward with the tentative plea agreement, and the attorney asked the court for a second, separate evaluation to determine competency and criminal responsibility. Judge Maryclaire Akers said the state had already paid for an evaluation but permitted the doctor who prepared the first evaluation to gather more information for a written report.

Eyewitness News said a new hearing was set for Sept. 9 to arraign Williams-Hampton on the murder and robbery charges he was indicted for last month, related to the murder of Caden Marton at Tobacco and Pipe in North Charleston in Januaury.
