Former city leader and gay rights advocate has passed away

A former Charleston City Council member and LGBTQ+ advocate has died. Robert Sheets served three consecutive terms on the council from 2007 to 2022. He served as president of Prime Timers’ Charleston chapter and founded the city’s annual Pride Picnic. Mayor Amy Goodwin released a statement offering condolences, and highlighting Sheets’ efforts to make the capital city welcoming for all residents.
