Concerns raised over childcare funding potentially running out

On Sunday, parents, educators and advocates gathered on the lawn of the West Virginia State Capitol to voice their concerns that child care funding could run out on September first. According to a news release from the Department of Human Services released Thursday, the reports of child care centers facing a funding crisis or closure are not accurate. In February, a federal rule was changed for payment to childcare providers to be based on enrollment instead of attendance. The DOHS has followed this rule since 2020. They said they still have temporary assistance for ‘Needy Families Funds’ to pay providers through the end of the year. After those run out, they said they can use a reserve fund created from the last special session. Advocates are still concerned. Their signs will stay on the capitol lawn until today (Tuesday).
