Corrections officers enter pleas related to inmate’s death

Two West Virginia corrections officers pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday on charges related to the assault and death on an inmate at Southern Regional Jail in March 2022. Jacob Boothe and Ashley Toney were on duty when 37-year-old Quantez Burks was beaten while handcuffed as a punishment for attempting to push past a jail guard and leave his assigned pod, according to an 18-count federal indictment that named four other jail employees. Court records said Boothe and Toney are each facing 10 years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release time and a $250 fine along with payment of restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 4.
