Financial claims continue against the Greenbrier Hotel

A new lawsuit filed by a Louisiana bank claims The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, owned and operated by the family of Gov. Jim Justice, has failed to pay back a $35 million pandemic relief loan. The lawsuit, filed by First Guaranty Bank last month, claims the Greenbrier Hotel Corporation agreed to the terms of a loan in 2020 totaling $35 million under the federal CARES Act. The bank said the loan called for a five-year gradual repayment plan with no payments due the first year. The lawsuit claims the Greenbrier Hotel Corporation has paid nothing on its loan as of 2024. Including principal, interest and late charges, First Guaranty said it is seeking more than $36.5 million. The lawsuit adds to the already mounting troubles for The Greenbrier, which is set for a foreclosure sale on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Eyewitness News reported an attorney for the Justice family has said the famed resort will not be sold. A motion has been filed to halt the sale.
