A Cabell County teacher has been named West Virginia History Teacher of the Year. Brian Casto, Milton Middle School eighth grade social studies teacher, was named History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, according to a statement from Cabell County Schools. Casto is a Marshall graduate who entered the field 15 years ago. In his time educating, he has been awarded the 2021 Honorary Golden Horseshoe award, the 2022 Teacher of the Year award and was inducted into the Class of 2024 Leadership West Virginia. In being named History Teacher of the Year, Casto will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a archive of American history books and education materials provided by the Gilder Lehrman Institute. He will also join the 53 finalists contending for the 2024 National History Teacher Award.
