Kanawha County lawyers announce new program that gets tougher on violent crimes

The Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday a policy aimed at taking a tougher stance on violent gun and sex crimes and crimes against children. The new Violent Offender Initiative for Community Empowerment, or VOICE, will prohibit bond reductions, agreed personal recognizance bonds, releases for treatment and misdemeanor pleas on felony charges for cases involving violent gun crimes, and sex crimes and crimes against children. Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney Debra Rusnak said in a news release that as a result of the policy, her office will seek the highest possible bonds and sentences for the specified crimes, effective now.
