MSHA issues a preliminary report on Taylor County miner’s death

A preliminary report filed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration provides new details on the death of a coal miner in Taylor County. On Aug. 5, 57-year-old William Crandall was “struck in the head while using an air lifting bag to rerail a longwall electrical power car” while working at ACI Tygart Valley’s Leer Mine in Grafton, according to the report. The report said Crandall died of his injuries two days later and his body was taken to Charleston for an autopsy. The MSHA noted Crandall had more than a decade of mining experience prior to his death.
