A federal investigation has determined that inadequate inspections and lax oversight led to a 2022 helicopter crash that killed six people in Logan County. The June 22, 2022, crash of a Bell Helicopter UH-1B, also known as a “Huey,” was found to be caused in part by the operator’s inadequate inspections and a lack of Federal Aviation Administration oversight, according to a report released Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board. The crash happened during a “Huey Reunion” event at Logan County Airport where spectators could pay to riide in the former military helicopter. The NTSB noted that the FAA lacked guidance for inspectors to perform routine surveillance of helicopters like this one in the “experimental exhibition” category. New safety recommendations have been made.
