A softball tournament benefiting a scholarship fund in memory of a fallen West Virginia State Police trooper is back for another year and bigger than before. The Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship Tournament is returning for a second year on Aug. 10 and will now feature 14 teams at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Baseball Field, according to a news release from organizers. West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard was killed in the line of duty in Mingo County on June 2, 2023. A memorial scholarship was established in his honor at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College. Maynard’s daughter, Zoe will present the scholarships, and his son, Finn, will throw out the first pitch.
