Charleston murder suspect is granted a new public defender ahead of trial

A Charleston man accused of killing his girlfriend’s mother and 14-year-old brother was granted a new counsel motion this week. 32-year old Markus Guy appeared in Kanawha County court Monday morning, and a judge granted the motion for a new public defender. Guy was indicted in July on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse causing death following the death of his girlfriend’s mother, Alisha Brooke Carnefix and her brother — later identified as Koda Jarrett — who was 14 years old. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in August. The trial is still set for Dec. 2, 2024.
