Fewer Kanawha County students are absent from school these days

The Kanawha County School system has been working on improving chronic absenteeism, and some improvement is happening. During the 2023-2024 school year, the district saw the number of chronically absent students decrease by three percent. Kim Legg is the lead attendance and social services director for Kanawha County Schools, and told Eyewitness News that the goal for the year is to collaborate with counselors, nurses, and mental health providers to identify issues. Legg said each school in the county is responsible for creating a tiered level system for support. They’ll continue to work with parents to lower the numbers even more.
