A man faces charges after breaking into Charleston City Hall

A man is in jail after police said he broke into Charleston City Hall Sunday night.
Jay Norton of Summersville, is charged with misdemeanor trespassing and destruction of property. According to a criminal complaint, Norton was sitting on the bench at the rear of Charleston City Hall, where the police station is located, because he was scared of being followed and wanted to be in a highly patrolled area. Police said Norton could be seen on camera walking to the police station’s entrance and banging on the door before eventually breaking the frame and going inside. Police said he then took the elevator to the third floor and locked himself inside a restroom where police eventually took him into custody. He’s currently in the South Central Regional Jail.
