The Kanawha County Board of Education voted 5-0 to consolidate McKinley Middle School into Hayes Middle. This comes just a day after the board voted 3-2 vote to consolidate East Bank Middle School into DuPont Middle. “Closing schools is not going to bring young families to Kanawha County,” a community member said. The county board of education published a 148-page report on why it believed McKinley should combine with Hayes. The board said the county lost around 5,000 students over the past decade. According to state department of education data, that translated to about a $29 million lost in funding. St. Albans Mayor Scott James wanted the board to bring a sense of community following closures by naming the school St. Albans Middle School.
