A new mayor has been appointed in Fort Gay

The Fort Gay Town Council met Monday to fill the positions of mayor and recorder after the positions were vacated following accusations of financial crimes. Eyewitness News reported the council appointed lifelong Fort Gay residents Ralph Dent to serve as mayor and Wade Cyrus as town recorder. The shakeup in leadership follows the arrest of former Mayor Joetta Hatfield and recorder/treasurer Sheila Bowen, who face charges for fraudulent schemes and embezzlement. Investigators said the pair had been accused of working together for years to falsify more than 200 checks worth close to $200,000. The accusations are still under investigation by State Police and the West Virginia State Auditor’s Office.
