If you see more police officers walking around, it’s part of an overall strategy. The Charleston Police Department said they’ve had foot patrols in the past, but over time, the practice became less common. Eyewitness News said a string of thefts in Elk City highlighted the importance of foot patrols. About $20,000 worth of tools were stolen from a construction site a couple weeks ago, and more recently, copper lines cut on about six HVAC units causing $100,000 in damages. Chief Scott Dempsey said they will be patrolling the entire city, but they will be focused on crime hotspots.
