High-profile Kanawha County trial enters its fourth day

Prosecutors are working to convince a jury that a Sissonville couple targeted and abused their adopted children because of their race, while defense attorneys paint a picture of two overwhelmed parents with traumatized children and no help from the system. Jeanne Whitefeather and Donald Lantz are both accused in a 20-count indictment alleging charges of human trafficking, child abuse and forced child labor along with civil rights violations that stem from the October 2023 discovery of two teenagers locked in a shed in Sissonville. At the time of the parents’ arrest, the children’s ages were 5, 9, 11, 14 and 16. So far this week, Eyewitness News said a neighbor has been called as a witness, and investigators who worked the case have also testified. The trial could last two weeks.
