Kentucky fire department installs a new Safe Haven Baby Box

A new Safe Haven Baby Box has opened in Boyd County Kentucky, offering a designated space for parents in crisis to leave an infant. The box, which is located at the Ashland Fire Department along Carter Avenue, was opened Thursday. Kentucky’s Safe Infant Act allows newborns to be anonymously surrendered to a police station, fire station, place of worship or medical facility without fear of prosecution so long as the baby hasn’t been abused, harmed or neglected. Once an object is placed in the box, an alarm is initiated. Local police, fire and EMS will be notified to respond. Eyewitness News said the box was paid for by donations and private donors.
