Marshall fined for pulling out of bowl game

Marshall University was fined by the Sun Belt Conference on Friday for opting out of its bowl game. The conference announced in a news release that it has issued a $100,000 institutional fine to Marshall for opting out of its Independence Bowl matchup against Army on Dec. 28. The Thundering Herd pulled out of the contest after several players entered the NCAA transfer portal following the departure of then-head coach Charles Huff. The university said at the time that it decided not to participate in the bowl game due to safety concerns for the remaining players.
