The ACLU wants one of the governor’s first orders to be rescinded

The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia is calling on the state’s governor to rescind an executive order relating to diversity, equity and inclusion. The nonprofit said Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s order ending all DEI programs at the state level was allegedly written so broadly it could infringe on free speech rights of college educators and others, according to a news release. As written, the order could also prohibit professors from discussing or presenting arguments both for and against a wide range of topics, from the role of women in military combat to race reparations. Eyewitness News said the ACLU warned that if Morrisey’s office “does not act quickly” to correct the order, it risks “costly litigation” against the state. The governor’s order came among several first-day actions he took after inauguration.
