Former Mercer County school resource officer faces charges

A former school resource officer in southern West Virginia was indicted this week on a child sexual abuse charge. Christopher Butler, 37, was indicted by a Mercer County grand jury on charges of sexually abusing a child and gross child neglect in a case dating back to 2023. Court documents show Butler was a member of the Princeton Police Department and a school resource officer at Princeton Senior High School when the alleged incident happened. Princeton Police Chief John Howell told Eyewitness News he was made aware of a West Virginia State Police investigation into Butler in January 2024. Butler was placed on administrative leave the next day and ultimately resigned from the police department in February 2024 prior to the conclusion of the criminal investigation.
