Highly-anticipated foster care hearing is set for today

Kanawha County Judge Maryclaire Akers set a hearing for today that will highlight what county and state officials have to say about the well-being of kids in West Virginia’s foster care system. The judge said she learned of one child who attempted suicide while staying in a hotel, and she wants to hear from leaders in the system about whether hotel stays are “safe and appropriate” for many of the state’s 6,000 foster care children. The order filed this week addresses concerns over children placed in hotels and at the Kanawha County 4H Foundation. The hearing starts at 11 am and it will be available virtually.
