Bill before state lawmakers would increase audits of fire departments

The West Virginia Senate unanimously passed a measure this week that would provide the state’s legislative auditor with the authority to review finances of volunteer fire departments on a regular basis. Eyewitness News said the bill would require audits of each volunteer fire department at least once every five years and it would allow more frequent reviews if there were concerns about “loss, mismanagement, misuse or waste of funds.” Currently, the legislative and state auditors conduct rolling audits of more than 400 volunteer fire departments across the state. The bill now goes to the lower chamber for review.
