Chronic Wasting Disease is detected in Grant County

The discovery of a deer with chronic wasting disease in Grant County has prompted officials with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources to expand a containment area. CWD is deadly condition that can spread among hooved animals. This finding marks the first new county with a confirmed case of CWD in a wild deer since 2023. Grant County has been part of a CWD containment area since 2015, according to the DNR. The finding will result in baiting, feeding and transport restrictions for hunters in the area. The DNR also plans to take precautionary measures in nearby Pendleton County.
