Scam reports are up, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to be wary of recent Bitcoin and AI fraud that’s sweeping the area. Sgt. Josh Lester said people are being fooled by Caller ID. Eyewitness News said the spoof calls appear like it’s the local sheriff’s office telephone number. The sheriff’s office put out a press release Saturday that included examples of people losing more than $40,000 through Bitcoin and artificial intelligence schemes. The scammers are using fear tactics to get vulnerable people to pay the money, telling people they missed jury duty, they have arrest warrants and police are on the way to arrest them. Another common scam is to imitate loved ones with the help of an AI voice generator. If you’re in doubt, hang up and don’t give out any personal information.
