Two state fishing records broken broken in May

Two West Virginia anglers reeled in record-breaking catches in May 2025, according to the Division of Natural Resources. On May 8, Seth Spry, of Lumberport, caught a 26.26 inch largemouth bass on private land in Harrison County, and it weighed in just shy of 10 pounds. The DNR noted the largemouth weight record remains with David Heeter, who in 1994 caught a bass weighing more than 12 pounds in Grant County. On May 9, Justin Conner, of Milton pulled a 51.49 inch blue catfish out of the Kanawha River in Putnam County, and it weighed more than 66 pounds, the state’s weight record remains with Michael John Drake who caught a catfish weighing nearly 70 pounds out of the Ohio River in 2023.
