Court documents have revealed new details regarding a reported bank robbery in Kanawha City on Thursday. Gary Lee Whitten, 60, has been charged with first-degree robbery and was taken into custody Friday afternoon. According to the criminal complaint – Whitten entered the United Bank along MacCorkle Avenue just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning. He went up to a teller and asked for a withdrawal slip – before going to sit down. Whitten was seen on camera footage writing a note on the slip. The teller told police that Whitten handed her a note that stated, “This is a robbery! Put no dye packs in the bag. Large bills only. No alarms.” The witness statement said the teller began to argue with the man over this and refused – when Whitten told her he would shoot her and another teller if she did not comply with his request. The teller put $350 into the bag.Then Whitten ran. Gary Lee Whitten was arraigned in Kanawha County magistrate court Friday afternoon. He is being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.
