A deadly encounter at a Cabell County jail has led to a new charge being filed against an inmate. Court records show 34-year old Allen Adkins of Milton has been charged with voluntary manslaughter. The criminal complaint said in May, investigators were alerted of a deadly assault that occurred at Western Regional Jail in Barboursville. Adkins was apparently involved in a fight with Lonnie Wayne Smith, of Hurricane, also an inmate. The complaint said Smith was placed on life support at St. Mary’s Medical Center where he died six days later due to a brain bleed. Adkins was in jail for burglary, petit larceny, receiving or transferring stolen goods and destruction of property, acording to jail records. He’s awaiting court proceedings at Western Regional Jail.
