Recent incidents involving guns are not cause for alarm, according to police

A rash of crime in downtown Charleston is raising safety concerns, but police believe the general public was never the intended target for gun violence. Police quickly made an arrest Monday, charging 21-year-old Nigel Hampton with malicious wounding in a shooting incident that critically wounded 26-year-old Jacques Weldon. Investigators said the victim was found lying on the sidewalk outside Adelphia Sports Bar & Grill along Capitol Street. The shooting followed weekend incidents in the downtown area where multiple guns were recovered from four juveniles over two nights during the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta. Police are looking into how juveniles acquired the guns. They believe the incidents are 100 percent isolated.
