The former Fort Gay mayor and town recorder have been indicted by a grand jury in an embezzlement case. Former mayor Joetta Hatfield and former treasurer and recorder Sheila Brown were both indicted by a Wayne County Grand Jury, alleging that the two women diverted more than $370,000 of public funds for their personal use over an eight year period from 2017 to 2025. The auditor’s office said investigators believe Hatfield embezzled about $245,000 while Bowen is accused of embezzling $127,000. Hatfield and Bowen are set for trial this October.
