Deer disease is common and expected during hunting season

Hemorrhagic disease has been confirmed in deer across several West Virginia counties, including Jackson, Ritchie, Pleasants, and Wood. The DNR says the disease is spread by biting flies and, while deadly to some deer, it’s a natural, seasonal occurrence and not a long-term threat. It can’t spread to humans or pets, and venison from healthy deer remains safe to eat. Hunters are still encouraged to enjoy the season but should report any sick or dead deer to the DNR.
