A federal waiver allowing West Virginia to remove soda as an entitlement under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was approved this week. The waiver allows West Virginia to remove soda as an entitlement under SNAP and redirect taxpayer-funded assistance toward more nutritious food, while building on Governor Patrick Morissey’s platform to fight obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In a WCHS poll following the May request, 58% of the nearly 600 voters signaled they did not support the removal of soda from SNAP.
