New Charleston cemetery monument honors historic family

A new monument honoring Jane Ferguson, the mother of educator and author Booker T. Washington, has been installed permanently at Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston.

Ferguson’s family moved to West Virginia after the Civil War and helped integrate the all-white town of Marmet. Jane Ferguson is buried at the cemetery, but the exact location remains unknown because a fire destroyed burial records.

The cemetery also launched the African American Walking Tour, which highlights the lives and contributions of Black leaders buried there.
