Two teachers unions combine instead of competing for memberships

West Virginia’s two statewide teacher unions – the West Virginia Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia – have merged to form a new labor union called Education West Virginia. According to Eyewitness News, Co-President Dale Lee said the decision to combine came after facing a decline in funding and insurance hikes. Lee added that the union’s goals include maintaining quality educators, improving pay and benefits, and raising concerns with the Public Employees Insurance Agency.
